Treason

treason-3

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”

I want to correct something that I wrote a while ago. I said Trump and Associates collusion with Russia — alleged at this point — was not technically “treason” because the Constitution speaks of “levying war” against the United States, and we are not at war with Russia ( and Turkey? And God knows where else?) I went with treason first, but someone wrote to me on my blog, and I considered their argument. So I thought, well if I were running an investigation — I’d go with criminal conspiracy.

But this morning I woke up with the words from the Constitution “adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.” I think the Constitution is saying it is treason if you help a nation we are at war with AND/OR you give aid and comfort to an enemy of this country whether or not we are at war or not.

For example, if an American helped the Japanese launch the attack on Pearl Harbor, he would be committing treason even if we weren’t at war with Japan at the moment of attack. War of course was declared AFTER the attack.

There haven’t been that many treason convictions and some aren’t helpful precedents. John Brown was convicted of treason for attempting to organize armed resistance to slavery in 1856. I can’t see the war or the enemy in this case.

Chief Justice John Marshall wrote that in order to have treason actual war has to be levied against the US, conspiracy to wage war does not rise to the level of treason. (Conspiracy is plenty serious.)

Was Russia waging war against the US? Are they still? Cyber war? A war to sabotage our democracy? If Trump and Associates colluded with Russia to get Trump elected it was a deal. What did Trump and Associates give to Russia as their part of the deal? What do they give them?

The punishment for treason is death, or not less than 5 years in prison with a fine of not less than $10,000, and a bar from ever holding public office.

Are the Congressional leaders blocking the investigations of Trump and Associates accomplices to very serious crimes?

Trump and Associates may be engaged not only in international graft on an incredible scale, but in actual espionage against our country.

This is mind boggling. We could very well be subject to a coup. (I only qualify my words because this all has to be proven legally.)

Congress and the media should be talking about nothing but the investigations into the Trump and Associates/Russian connection.

A few people look to me at times for some encouragement and a sense of what to do. I don’t why. This is an art blog dedicated to me trying to understand and respond to the whole world, not just things Trump. I just try to be as smart and good as I can be, just like you do.

The only thing I can advise this morning is, be aware. Hope isn’t optimism. It just means you think and act in ways dedicated to the best result. There are no guarantees that the best result will be achieved no matter how excellent our efforts are.

But what else can we do?

I think this is fascism’s last gasp, but it will do a lot of damage before it goes down. But what do I know? And what does it matter?

Our government may well have been hijacked by criminals that want to destroy our way of life — the Republican Party. A true joke.

I pray this ends sooner rather later. I can’t suggest more concrete action than prayer at the moment. You can’t protest or “resist” your way to a needed investigation.

Our awareness is the greatest positive pressure we can exert right now, I reckon.
